The promise of social media is to connect everyone with each other. But it creates more problems than it solves for most people like increased loneliness in youth, unrealistic standards for beauty & lifestyle, & privacy nightmare in one of a few issues.

The recent article co-published by The MarkUp and Consumer Reports shows the true horrors of social media as a data harvester.

Here is one paragraph that sum it up:

Using a panel of 709 volunteers who shared archives of their Facebook data, Consumer Reports found that a total of 186,892 companies sent data about them to the social network. On average, each participant in the study had their data sent to Facebook by 2,230 companies. That number varied significantly, with some panelists’ data listing over 7,000 companies providing their data.

I know that social media companies collect our data but the scale that is provided by the reports is beyond my imagination & expectations.

We now need to take control of our privacy and private information by using alternative solutions that serve our current needs and respect our privacy & let us control our data. Nowadays, we are moving away from owning your data, software, games & copies of movies in physical copies. It did not sit well with me that I have no control over the things that I daily use or the company that is behind it will shut down and I could not access my data & devices.

As a user and consumer, I have partially moved away from social media, and use privacy-respecting software & services. I will also write a post about what software I use in daily life near future post. So, take care mysterious visitors and thanks for reading my thoughts.
